3 surprise veterans the Browns could cut before the season

The Browns have young players at a few positions who could push veterans off the roster.

As training camp nears, the Cleveland Browns have acquired depth at certain positions. But with tough cap decisions looming and younger talent emerging, some unexpected veteran cuts could be on the horizon. Here are three surprising names who could be on the chopping block — and what it would mean financially if they’re let go before the regular season.

1. Shelby Harris (DT)

The Browns re-signed Harris last year to a two-year deal, but with a deep rotation that includes Maliek Collins, Mike Hall Jr., Jowon Briggs, and rookie Mason Graham, Harris could be squeezed out. A post-June 1st would save the team $1.68 million in cap space with just $1.1 million in dead money. If younger linemen show out in camp, Harris may be viewed as a replaceable depth piece.

2. Jordan Hicks (LB)

Hicks was brought in to stabilize the linebacker corps with leadership and experience, but struggled to stay healthy. Younger players like Mahmoud Diabate and the recently drafted Carson Schwesinger could make him expendable. A cut would free up $2.5 million in cap room while incurring just $1.66 million in dead cap. His release could also signal confidence in the development of linebacker Nathaniel Watson.

3. Joe Flacco (QB)

The most surprising name on this list, Flacco was acquired to compete for the starter role before the Browns drafted Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. If the Browns feel better about Kenny Pickett and the two rookies, they could move on. Cutting Flacco before the season would save $1.25 million against the cap with $1.6 million in dead money. While unlikely, this move would reflect a clear shift in the team’s QB2 philosophy.

These moves aren’t necessarily expected, but in a league where cap flexibility and youth development often win out, don’t rule out a surprise or two from Andrew Berry before Week 1.

Do you think any of these veterans are at risk of not making the team? Are there any others that could face a similar outcome? Let us know in the comments below.
