Breaking: Browns Cut Potential Starter in Shocker – 3 Possible Destinations

August 24, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Cleveland Browns quarterback situation has been in the headlines this NFL Preseason, but signal-caller Tyler Huntley didn’t make the cut. According to the breaking news, the Browns are moving on from Huntley, so that means they will only keep four quarterbacks on the roster between Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. The release comes as a surprise since Pickett is still nursing an injury, but the expectation is that he will return and be ready to suit up for Week 1. However, head coach Kevin Stefanski already named veteran Joe Flacco as the starter moving forward, but all of this puts Huntley back on the market, and it shouldn’t be too long before he signs with a new team.

Originally selected as an undrafted rookie in 2020, the former Utah product spent the first three years of his career serving as a reliable backup for the Baltimore Ravens, led by back-to-back MVP Lamar Jackson. Huntley went on to earn a Pro Bowl in 2022 and was a replacement for Bills quarterback Josh Allen due to his performance in the wild-card that year, despite the loss. As of recently, Huntley has been a journeyman between returning to Baltimore and joining the Dolphins as a backup to serve as a bridge for Dolphins signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa. After a 20-3 victory in Week 17 as a Dolphin last season, Huntley was hoping to make a case in Cleveland, but the quarterback room was too deep.

Next Potential Fits

Baltimore Ravens

No one is taking Lamar Jackson’s starting job for years to come, but they’re in dire need of depth. The Baltimore Ravens signed former Dallas Cowboys veteran Cooper Rush with hopes that he could hold down the fort to show off some type of reliability. However, it hasn’t been the case as Rush’s preseason performance this year has been a complete meltdown, and they should probably get another quarterback if they plan on keeping him. This isn’t to say that Jackson won’t be in solid shape or an injury will happen, but when you have one of the greatest quarterbacks in the league, it’s always best to supplement him with enough support.

Rush isn’t that good to serve as a backup anymore. This should ignite a flame in this offense to get Huntley back and a part of this offense so they’re intact for the 2025 regular season.

New Orleans Saints

Meanwhile, both Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough had their fair share of shining on the field this preseason. However, Rattler probably has the edge in this quarterback situation due to his play last year, serving as somewhat of a capable signal-caller while Derek Carr was nursing an injury. Shough is okay, but he isn’t on the level where the Saints need him to be. With that, they should invest in a veteran like Huntley to back up Rattler while it buys Shough some time to develop in this offense led by head coach Kellen Moore.

Las Vegas Raiders

After backup Aidan O’Connell injured his wrist in the preseason finale, the Las Vegas Raiders will more than likely be on the hunt and look for support in starter Geno Smith. Since no one will be taking over starting duties for Smith for a while, the Raiders should roll the dice on a low-stakes veteran. Huntley is past his prime, but he’s easily a better backup than O’Connell in the right situation.
