Sorry, I had to. It’s Friday, right?
We all have to have a little bit of fun. Anyway, the Cleveland Browns had agreed to a pay cut with running back Jerome Ford. It’ll be $3.486 million to a guaranteed $1.75 million.
Honestly, Jerome from the hit sitcom ‘Martin’ would never ever ever take a pay cut. He would be absolutely insulted that it was even suggested to him by anyone. Well, this circumstance is a bit different and it leaves the Browns with a very interesting situation in regards to the running backs for this coming year.
The Browns now have said Ford, Pierre Strong and Troy Hairston. That fills the depth chart and there is just one elephant in the room and it’s about Nick Chubb.
Arguably one of the greatest Browns ever, Chubb is 29 years old, has been through multiple severe injuries and is winding down a career worth celebrating. However, looking around social media and the opinions of those in this area are most want Chubb signed regardless of his actual current remaining ability on the football field.
I am surprised the Browns didn’t jump to simply give Chubb another shot for a single season and here’s why. There are literally a portion of fans that I could see boycotting the Browns because of their love for Chubb and just how not only great a player he was, but a person too. There’s no denying that…
For me, as a fan, I loved Chubb just like everyone else. But football is a business and teams have to move on and try to be the best possible. Part of the reason why Chubb may not re-sign here has to do with money and if he’s not willing to take a cut, just as Ford did, this relationship could be over…and that’s his choice.
There were rumors that Chubb was seeking a deal with the Chicago Bears and I don’t doubt he’ll be able to find a home somewhere. When that happens, this fanbase will be going crazy. Sadly, there won’t be as much excitement about what a career he had here in Cleveland, but just simply that the team couldn’t get him back in relfection instead.
Last year, in 14 games with the Browns, Ford had 104 carries, 565 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 37 catches for 225 yards. Chubb played in eight games with 102 carries, 332 yards and three touchdowns himself.
Since Ford was willing to take that pay cut, it looks like the Browns have made a decision on their team’s future at running back. Let’s see what team takes a shot on Chubb. Additionally, the reaction of the fan base if this transition becomes official.
Nick Chubb will always be loved, but this isn’t the ending the Browns fans wanted with him and his playing here in Cleveland.
