An injury to a UDFA, roster hopeful leads to Jackson Barton signing

Once training camp starts, it is very easy for fans to get acquainted with players and start to root for them. Cleveland Browns fans have often found a couple of unknown prospects that flash as exciting prospects during camp and, most of the time, fail to make an impact on the team’s roster.

This year’s crop of undrafted free agents had a number of players who could compete for Browns roster spots, including on the offensive line.

Unfortunately, OL Justin Osborne, whose athletic traits and versatility made him an interesting UDFA, will not make it to mandatory minicamp, much less training camp. Cleveland announced on Monday that Osborne was being waived with an injury designation, with OT Jackson Barton signed to take his roster spot.

The 6’7” Barton was a seventh-round selection of the Indianapolis Colts in 2019 but is officially in his third season in the NFL after playing games for the Las Vegas Raiders (2021-22) and the Arizona Cardinals (2023-24). Barton officially started two games for former Browns assistant Drew Petzing’s offense last season.

According to Pro Football Focus, Barton played 151 snaps at right tackle last season and six at left tackle while grading out at 63.9 (62nd out of 140 tackles).

If Osborne passes through waivers, he’ll likely be placed on injured reserve for the season.
