Browns Myles Garrett, QB plans: Rounding up what rumors we’ve heard before the NFL combine

NFL free agency and the NFL draft could lead to big changes for the Browns but what about Myles Garrett?

The new league year starts March 12th but it doesn’t mean we haven’t received any offseason news regarding the Cleveland Browns. With star defensive end Myles Garrett requesting a trade a couple of weeks ago and the team’s plan at the quarterback position, there is a lot to discuss.

Radio Row appearance doesn’t seem to change Browns stance on Garrett

During Super Bowl week, star defensive end Myles Garrett requested a trade from the Browns which sent the entire NFL world into a frenzy. Garrett was on Radio Row at Bourbon Street in New Orleans and he made multiple appearances on multiple radio shows discussing why he felt the need to make this trade request during this part of his career.

From everything we have heard, including shortly after Garrett’s trade request, not much has changed:

  • Even after Garrett’s media appearances, it didn’t change the team’s stance. Despite multiple teams calling and asking, Cleveland is not motivated to move him at all.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that if the Browns offseason plans were to impress Garrett, he could end up rescinding his trade request:

It’s early, mind you but Cleveland doesn’t appear motivated to move Garrett in any capacity. Trading Garrett would make the Browns cap situation a mess and it could cause a domino effect for the rest of the roster. Cleveland believes they have the roster to compete but the situation with Garrett is tricky for them to navigate.

Browns offseason plans at QB

With quarterback Deshaun Watson probably not playing in Cleveland again, the team is looking at other signal callers whether it’s by the draft or free agency. A lot continues to spin about the team’s plan ahead of the NFL combine, similar to what we shared with you shortly after the season ended:

  • Cleveland is looking at bringing a veteran in via free agency and drafting someone in the draft
  • The Browns are monitoring the situation in Atlanta with Kirk Cousins very closely
  • As far as the Shedeur Sanders at #2 rumors, it’s more smoke than anything. Cleveland is doing their due diligence with all of the quarterbacks in this draft but the Browns are not dead set on drafting Sanders.

As far as what Cleveland does at quarterback, hopefully, they have a plan on what they want to do but the QB class in both free agency and the draft is not ideal. The Browns will likely play it safe, relatively speaking, instead of taking unnecessary swings while building their roster in order to stay competitive.
