Browns Shedeur Sanders’ speeding is a real-world problem, not an NFL one… yet

Browns fans have a history of problematic players that they’ve followed

Mama said nothing good ever happens after midnight.

The entire NFL universe is paying attention to the Cleveland Browns this summer. Everyone wants to know what the quarterbacks are doing, specifically Shedeur Sanders. It is the story of the summer.

After the Browns’ mandatory minicamp finished up last week, Sanders remained in Ohio along with the other drafted and undrafted rookies for an orientation.

On early Tuesday morning, Sanders received a traffic ticket for driving 101 mph, according to police records of the Strongsville (Ohio) Police Department. The time was 12:24 a.m. Sanders was clocked doing 41 MPH over the speed limit in a 60 MPH zone on 71 North in his black Dodge TRX truck.

The 23-year-old Sanders was drafted in the fifth round after being projected to be taken in the first round. Regarding the ticket, it is a fourth-degree misdemeanor. Sanders can either pay a fine of $250 or fight it in a bench trial slated for July 3.

Interestingly enough, former Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James received a ticket for going over 100-MPH when he was 23 years old as well.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol website, their data states that over 83,000 people were written tickets for 20 miles over the speed limit, and more than 3,700 received tickets for going over 100 miles per hour in 2024. Body cam footage of the traffic stop has quickly been released:

The Browns brass have been made aware of the incident but are unlikely to impose any punishment. Sanders has made a good impression with Cleveland so far, displaying maturity and getting a feel for the pro game.

After Sanders arrived in Cleveland, he made an appearance at John Marshall High School and discussed with teens how to make good decisions in their lives.

(Following addition from Jared Mueller to Barry’s piece)

For now, Sanders’ decision to drive at that speed is a real-world concern. Road safety becomes less and less certain as speeds increase, especially in the triple digits. For now, the ticket will have no impact on the field, but could be something to watch as decision-making off the field is known to have a dramatic impact on the field for some players.

Hopefully, like James back in his first stint with the Cavs, this is a blip on the radar in his career. If not, Browns fans will remember this as the first sign of problems.

Hopefully, Sanders remembers what Mama said about “after midnight” (and we are sure there are sayings about speeding as well).
