According to Jay Glazer, the Jets told Rodgers he would not be back with the team. Rodgers wore out his welcome in the Big Apple after a tumultuous two seasons that saw more highlights on the Pat McAfee Show than on the field.
Rodgers is a talented quarterback but failed to orchestrate every part of the offense with the Jets. It was an ambitious goal that only Hall of Fame quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Drew Brees have had success with.
The Browns should be very interested in the 41-year-old quarterback. Rodgers is the best quarterback available this offseason. He’s unlikely to draw the high price tag associated with franchise quarterbacks.
Rodgers is a fantastic boom-or-bust option for the team. The Browns are trying to keep their playoff window open next season. Rodgers can be successful with the infrastructure the Browns can provide. But he needs to buy into Stefanski’s system.
Rodgers is not a safe option. There’s no guarantee that he won’t continue to regress. The Browns signing Rodgers could land them inside the bottom three teams. The team might have to blow everything up next season if Rodgers and the Browns fall off the rails.
If the Jets release Rodgers with a post-June 1 designation, he can sign with a team on March 12, the first day of the league year. The Browns will have plenty of time to do their due diligence on the quarterback.
