Despite getting Xavier Worthy back in the lineup, the Kansas City Chiefs are still in the market for a running back and could trade for Jerome Ford. According to one source, Ford was named a fit for the Chiefs’ backfield unit since they’re looking for a viable backup behind Isiah Pacheco. Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the former Alabama and Cincinnati product became a subject of trade rumors since Quinshon Judkins received a new role over Ford. This means the Browns could stick with Judkins as the future of this running back room, while Dylan Sampson is likely to back him up for the foreseeable future.
With Ford and a 0-3 record for the Browns, this might be the best time for the team to pull off a trade. It’s easy to understand why the Chiefs might be a fit for Ford, as veteran Kareem Hunt will become a free agent next offseason, and it’s really anyone’s starting job up for grabs in the backfield unit. While they did sign Elijah Mitchell to provide some stability, they still need a backfield piece that is a heavy-hitter who can scramble for extra yardage to move the chains. Ford might not last long on this offense, depending on how fast rookie Brashard Smith can get up to speed, but he’s arguably a better upgrade over Hunt.

Other Possible Fits
Los Angeles Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers are still without an adequate backup for Omarion Hampton after losing Najee Harris to a brutal injury. There are plenty of trade suitors out there, but this one makes too much sense for the Chargers. Jim Harbaugh wants to build an old-school defense, but the same case is for the backfield unit, as they want to run the football more often. However, they know Hassan Haskins and Kimani Vidal aren’t going to make things easy for Hampton.
The Chargers have all the momentum in the world and shouldn’t let this stop that. Hampton is still developing and would benefit from the bullet presence of Ford. He’s not going to get every snap out there, but he would help Hampton in situations as a dependable ball-carrier.
New Orleans Saints
Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints are in the running back market as well. Alvin Kamara continues to be a name in the trade market, and if he decides to leave, the Saints will quickly need to rebuild their run offense. While they had Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Cam Akers in their hands, they weren’t able to do much, so the Saints released them. Ford might be the latest running back who could turn out long-term for the Saints at the right price, even before he hits free agency.
Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys are expected to be a playoff team this season, and even though Javonte Williams is showing a burst of life that he could be long-term, why not add more competition? Miles Sanders is still his old self, and 2025 draft pick Jaydon Blue is still hasn’t started a game for Dallas. Ford could get this unit up to speed and could possibly turn into a viable option to advance further for a wild-card spot.
