Chiefs Expected to Trade For Playmaker – But Not Tyreek Hill

September 11, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Tyreek Hill trade rumors are all over the place following the Xavier Worthy injury, but the Kansas City Chiefs could surprise everyone and trade for tight end David Njoku. A former first-round pick, the 29-year-old tight end is entering the final year of his contract on a team that almost certainly won’t compete for anything. With rookie Harold Fannin looking like the real deal in Week 1, Cleveland could entertain offers for their veteran tight end.

At least, that’s what Bleacher Report‘s Kristopher Knox believes. In a recent article, the NFL analyst made his case for a David Njoku trade and listed the Kansas City Chiefs as one of the top suitors for the veteran.

“Fannin caught seven catches for 63 yards in his NFL debut. Njoku was also involved (3 catches, 37 yards) against Cincinnati, and it’s easy to see how Cleveland could benefit from using both in 12 personnel,” Knox writes. “However, Fannin’s presence on a rookie contract should make the idea of trading Njoku a lot more palatable for the Browns – especially since the 2023 Pro Bowler should carry a premium price tag.”

Browns David Njoku Trade
Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku (85) collides with Cincinnati Bengals safety Jordan Battle (27) on a catch in the first quarter of the NFL Week 1 game between the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025.

Chiefs Could Trade For Browns TE David Njoku

The Kansas City Chiefs need weapons, especially after wide receiver Xavier Worthy suffered a shoulder injury in Week 1. While the former first-round pick should return to the field before long, Patrick Mahomes needs another reliable set of hands. Travis Kelce is one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history, but the three-time Super Bowl champion is slowing down. He’s a shell of his former self, and a David Njoku trade could add some much-needed talent to this roster.

In the short term, Njoku could provide Mahomes with a competent pass-catcher to keep the offense on schedule and move the chains. Later in the season, however, Njoku could round out a surprisingly deep group of pass-catchers. Worthy should return to the field in a week or two, and Rashee Rice will lead this passing attack once he’s done serving his six-game suspension. With Njoku and Kelce complementing these promising pass-catchers, the sky is the limit for this offense.

Would the Browns Do This?

Of course, it takes two to tango, and the Browns won’t trade David Njoku for nothing. However, the fact of the matter is this team is not close to contention and should try and get what they can for a player who will be past his prime before this team is ready to compete.

The X-factor to a David Njoku trade could be Harold Fannin. The tight end had a fantastic debut, but it’s only one game. If this was a flash in the pan, Cleveland will probably keep Njoku to help support the aging Flacco and first-year quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. However, if Fannin can keep this up, the Browns could send Njoku to the Chiefs for a conditional third-round pick.
