If you were one of those who said, “I go where Chubb goes!” well… time to put on your belt buckle and cowboy hat, because Chubb is officially a Houston Texan and won’t be returning to the Browns for his 8th consecutive season. It was a somber day for some in Cleveland, especially for those who watched what once was the only bright spot in many a dark time, simply walking out the front door, bags packed with no invitation back. Chubb had his first interview and I can admit it was quite strange to see him with that navy blue Texan backdrop. He might have even taken a Jab at the browns, stating, “I came here and saw a bunch of guys who like to work and not talk, and I realized I’m a perfect fit.” Was it a true jab or just trying to fit in? We probably won’t know even if asked, as Chubb will always take the high road.
During this offseason, it became evident as time went on that the front office and the coaching staff were moving in a different direction and decided to keep Jerome Ford and Pierre Strong Jr alongside drafting two running backs in the first four rounds of this year’s draft. We say goodbye to a guy who embodied exactly who you wanted as your franchise player – someone who worked harder than anyone, whether in-game or in the offseason, a pillar in the community and never in trouble. He was the Browns. The Jim Brown of the modern era for some in Cleveland and in just seven seasons he already had the 3rd most rushing yards in the history of the Browns.
But we must not dwell and as with any breakup, we must get under someone to get over someone and Andrew Berry is banking on that. An attempt to lessen the blow; for some fans, he drafted Ohio State’s own star Quinshon Judkins. I could see the thought here, he’s a very skilled running back and as my previous article argued, they are very similar in nature (Chubb and Judkins). Ohio State and the Browns on a large-scale share many of the same fans, so it’s not a far-fetched idea to think there was some intentionality to the selection.
The Browns and Texans don’t play this year in the regular season or the preseason, so we won’t be guaranteed a front row to a homecoming or faceoff, but the possibility remains in the playoffs.
We just have to make it there first.
