After Baker Mayfield led the Cleveland Browns to the playoffs in 2020, the team wasted no time in picking up his fifth-year option. But the team has yet to give him a long-term extension, and Colin Cowherd believes the team is running out of time.
On Wednesday’s edition of The Herd, Cowherd pointed out that some of the criticism of Mayfield is justified due to his record in spite of how much national media attention he gets. He pointed out that Mayfield no longer has the protection of the Cleveland media because the Browns are great everywhere else.
Cowherd concluded that the coming months are going to be telling as far as where Mayfield stands with his peers. He believes that Browns GM Andrew Berry will have a tough decision to make in the offseason.
“The GM who inherited him – didn’t draft him – is going to have to make a decision,” Cowherd said. “The Cleveland media is again wrong on Mayfield. Too hyperbolic early, and now too critical.”

The Cleveland Browns offense currently ranks in the top six, but it’s largely been the running game doing the heavy lifting. Cleveland’s rushing attack ranks No. 1 in every category.
Baker Mayfield, on the other hand, leads a Browns passing attack that ranks near the bottom of the league. He’s completed 67-percent of his passes for 1,240 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions.
Granted, the passing attack might be slow because the running game is so dominant. But it still came up short against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 5.
Does Colin Cowherd have a point here?
