Commanders, Browns Could Agree On Blockbuster Trade

September 13, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Washington Commanders and the Cleveland Browns could exchange in a potential trade involving Jerome Ford at some point during the 2025 regular season. According to a source, they put together a list of seven trade candidates, and Ford was one of the names, but the Commanders are a potential fit for the running back. After losing Austin Ekeler to a brutal torn Achilles tendon for the season, it’s easy to understand why Ford might be a fit in the backfield unit. Washington traded Brian Robinson Jr. in favor of Jacory Croskey-Merritt, but that is hurting the run game now that Ekeler probably won’t be returning, and this is because he was in his final year of his contract.

With Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr. as the backup for Croskey-Merritt, the Commanders should trade for Ford to salvage the running room. The good news for them is that the Browns have one of the deepest backfield units in the league, so they probably will be open to trading Ford at the right time since he is in his last year of his contract as well. Croskey-Merritt is the future of this run game for Washington, but they must find a way to trade for Ford to serve as a backup to help reduce the stress on the rookie. After the Browns elevated Quinshon Judkins to get some reps for Week 2 and fourth-round pick Dylan Sampson is getting most of the carries, the Commanders won’t be the only team looking into Ford.

Commanders, Browns Could Agree On Blockbuster Jerome Ford Trade

Other Possible Suitors

Los Angeles Chargers

Why not? The Los Angeles Chargers possibly have one of the most old-school running schemes, but powerful backfield guys between 2025 draft pick Omarion Hampton and Najee Harris. Nobody loves running the football more than head coach Jim Harbaugh, so no one should put it past him if he looks into trading for another running back midway through the 2025 campaign. Imagine Jerome Ford, Hampton and Harris all on the same team, which could turn into a red-zone nightmare for opposing defenses.

Ford might not get all of the attention in Los Angeles, but it gives the Chargers the upper hand that most teams in the AFC and that is a blockbuster running back that has a lot of muscle and can break off defenders.

New Orleans Saints

Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints are already building a new roster for quarterback Spencer Rattler. After trading for DeVaughn Vele and Ja’Lynn Polk this year while claiming Trey Palmer off waivers, the Saints are building something special for the future, led by new head coach Kellen Moore. However, they must treat the running back unit with the same energy. Star running back Alvin Kamara isn’t slowing down anytime soon, but he aging, and since they were attempting to get Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Cam Akers up to speed, it didn’t work out like they wanted.

Ford could transform the depth of this backfield room and help Kendre Miller move the snaps in situational moments when Kamara can’t.

Dallas Cowboys

However, the Dallas Cowboys should still keep an eye on the running back trade market here. Despite signing Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders while drafting Jaydon Blue, they must continue testing who can stay consistent. Depending on the severity of their depth midway through the 2025 campaign, they should trade for Ford to give Williams and Blue a boost while Sanders is used in some moments.
