This Sunday at noon (CST) the Browns host the Giants for preseason game number two. Noon on Sunday seems like a great time for a Browns game. As with the first game, head coach Kevin Stefanski said he’ll rest the majority of the starters. So why am I watching? Like I said last week, it’s technically a Browns game, so of course, I’m going to watch. Hopefully, I won’t sustain an injury while watching the game. On a positive note, I’m very good at riding a stationary bike. So which players will I be watching this week?
LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. Because of the injuries to LB Jacob Phillips and LB Sione Takitaki, JOK will likely start Sunday. I’m very interested in seeing how he has progressed with a full week of practice. Prior to the Jacksonville game, he only practiced one time. I’d also like to see if the Giants are going to game plan against him. I know it’s only a pre-season game, but if the Giants do scheme against JOK, it’s the ultimate compliment.
RB/WR/KR Demetric Felton. During the Jaguars game, Felton was primarily used as a wide receiver. This week he was practicing with the running backs. I’m very curious as to how the Browns are going to use him in the running game. Speaking of the running game, the Browns struggled running the ball versus the Jaguars. Yes, it was the Browns’ number two offensive line against the Jags’ number one defense for a quarter and a half, but you have to think Kevin Stefanski would like to see improvement. He can’t run the fullbacks every week.
CB Greg Newsome. With the injury to Greedy Williams on Friday (migraine), Newsome will get more opportunities Sunday. Against the Jags, he was very good but did allow a big third-down catch. During the practices Thursday and Friday against the Giants he played extremely well. Let’s see if it transfers over to Sunday.
DE Curtis Weaver. With the injury to DE Porter Gustin (knee), it’s next man up and Weaver might be the man. Against Jacksonville, he was caught out of position too many times. However the Giants’ offensive line isn’t the greatest even with the starters playing, so hopefully, he can be more consistent. On a side note, the Giants offensive line is so bad, they brought their scouting staff to Berea this week to scout the Browns’ backup offensive linemen. Something to keep an eye on prior to the final cutdown day.
Others I’ll be watching. DT Tommy Togiai, S Richard LeCounte III, DE Cameron Malveaux, DT Jordan Elliot, T James Hudson, DT Malik McDowell and OL Blake Hance. If C Nick Harris (knee) can’t play, Hance will probably start at center. I really want to see WR Anthony Schwartz play, but he might be held out another week due to a hamstring injury.
I hope for a clean game with no injuries and very few penalties by the Browns. It will be great to see FirstEnergy Stadium with more than 12,000 fans in attendance for a game. Everyone enjoy the game, I’m heading into the facility with a trainer, I think I hurt my hamstring writing this article.
