“I Think They Are Going to Roll” With Kenny Pickett – Browns Quarterback Competition Update

June 25, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Diontae Johnson said in a recent interview on Sports and Suits that he expects Kenny Pickett to be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns in 2025. The former Steelers wide receiver last played with Kenny Pickett in 2023, when Johnson had over 700 yards before leaving Pittsburgh. The Browns quarterback competition is one to keep an eye on, and this latest update can provide some insight into the expectations for the Browns season in 2025.

How Kenny Pickett Impacts the Offense

The Browns quarterback situation is a familiar one. The team enters 2025 without a clear-cut starter on the roster, and Pickett has the second most experience among healthy players on the roster. Unfortunately, that experience comes with some hindrances. Pickett is the current record holder for the lowest TD% per pass attempt all-time. He just doesn’t push the ball down the field with enough arm talent or aggression to get big plays. On the plus side, his risk-averse play style keeps the ball out of harm’s way the majority of the time. His Int% is under two percent, which is nice when he’s also not scoring at a predictable clip.

If Kenny Pickett is the starter for the Browns for all of 2025, expect the offense to move slowly, methodically, and through the arms of Quinshon Judkins. As a result, the Browns receivers will not be useful for fantasy football, and David Njoku takes a hit as well. It’s not good for fantasy, and it’s not a big boost for their Vegas projections either.

Other Browns Quarterback Options

Joe Flacco

The wily vet, Flacco has a chance to step in and make this team relatively fun. Their defense is still relatively strong with the Myles Garrett extension, and Flacco has shown that he still has some gas left in the tank. He’s responsible with the ball, but can still push it downfield with enough velocity to get Jerry Jeudy, Cedric Tillman, and David Njoku involved. At 40 years old, he’s not the long-term solution, but he has the best chance to push the Browns over .500 in 2025.

Shedeur Sanders

Sanders has the most buzz around him, and it might be the most media attention given to a day-three quarterback in history. He’s a relatively quick processor, but he took far too many sacks in college. With the Browns unlikely to compete for a Super Bowl in 2025, seeing what Sanders and the next quarterback can give to the team should be their priority.

Dillon Gabriel

Gabriel is the forgotten quarterback in this room. While Sanders gets the majority of the attention, Gabriel was picked 50 spots ahead of Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft. He has plenty of college experience, but his physical limitations, between height and arm strength, keep him on the back burner for now. He has a little bit of escapability, which can make games fun, but he’s a far cry from a franchise savior.
