As a writer, I typically try and keep my personal feelings about the Browns outside of my writing, so I can keep it as objective as possible. However, I am a fan first, and I cannot watch this coaching search much longer.
Before the hiring of Kevin Stefanski, the team was promising and the Browns appeared to be one of the top jobs in the league. We had a young, promising backfield with Nick Chubb and Baker Mayfield. Also, we had a plethora of draft picks and cap space in the upcoming years to acquire talent to win.
Now…
We are possibly the worst job in the league: no one believes in any of the quarterbacks on this team, we have no elite receivers and our star running back severely injured his leg. Even though our defense is elite, our offense is so dysfunctional that no coach wants to touch it with a ten-foot pole. Now reports are coming out that we are settling into the promotion of Jim Schwartz.
I have absolutely no problem with Jim Schwartz being the head coach. If he is in Cleveland, our defense should continue to be elite, but why are the reports using settle to describe the hire? Why are we hiring a coach that the front office clearly doesn’t believe in? Simply because we don’t really have much of a choice. Mike McDaniel decided to drop out of the race to become an offensive coordinator in Los Angeles. Instead of becoming a head coach in the NFL, he decided the coordinator job was better. One of the many wake-up calls Jimmy Haslam should be seeing.
After the firing of Kevin Stefanski, Jimmy Haslam specifically mentioned how well Andrew Berry had done in the last year. Why would he pick the last year to mention? I believe it is because Paul DePodesta was in charge for the previous decade. If Andrew were in charge, I believe Haslam would have mentioned the various good additions throughout the previous years as well, but no. No one wants to come to Cleveland, and we have basically a brand-new front office that had to take the blame for the poor decisions of Paul DePodesta.
By no means do I think we are screwed for the next couple of years; there are plenty of great coaches left in this cycle. Jim Schwartz may just be the answer. Schwartz will play right into our strengths. I understand we don’t know what the condition of Quinshon Judkins looks like, but Schwartz would play physical football. We may finally see a Browns team run the ball, something we haven’t seen in years. Also, at least we wouldn’t have to worry about the defense.
The fans deserve better. We have stuck through this team through thick and thin. At the end of the day, I just want a coach to win. I couldn’t care less about who gets hired if we win. Now that Andrew Berry can finally pick his own coach, I just want the front office to believe in them. I understand the Browns aren’t exactly the most desirable location for a new head coach, but I just want to watch this team win again. I assume you do too.
