Jameis Winston Wants to Play for This Particular Team

February 6, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Veteran quarterback Jameis Winston is a free agent this offseason. Winston had a very up-and-down season with the Cleveland Browns. He frequently produced big numbers but also many turnovers that hurt the team. It seems unlikely Winston will be brought back to the Browns. Based on this, Winston recently said that he would like to play for this particular team.

Jameis Winston Wants to Play for This Particular Team

Quarterback Jameis Winston is one of the most high-risk, high-reward players of all time. Winston is fully capable of throwing for 400 yards and 4 touchdowns in a game. However, he is also capable of throwing 4 interceptions in any game. Winston can be the reason his team wins games and the reason his team loses games. Signing him would once again be a high-risk, high-reward move for a front office. However, the New York Giants need a quarterback, and Winston said he would love to sign with them.

Giant Fit

Jameis Winston would be an intriguing fit with the New York Giants. Winston would immediately boost this passing offense and how dynamic it can be. On the other hand, the Giants should be looking ahead to the future. Signing Winston does not make them contenders alone so they could be better off drafting a quarterback. Regardless, Winston would be a big step up from last year’s quarterbacks Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, and Tommy DeVito for New York.

Benefits

Due to his play style, Winston will open up the passing game a lot more for the Giants. Last season, the Giants ranked 28th in the league in passing yards per game with 189.9. In his starts last year, Winston averaged 291 passing yards per game. This is over a 100-yard per-game difference just through the air. However, the benefits of signing Winston go beyond the numbers. He is a great locker room guy and a great leader.

Jameis Winston is a great quarterback for receivers to have. He always gives his playmakers a chance on 50/50 balls. This would be great for Giants star receiver Malik Nabers. Nabers is coming off of an amazing rookie season in New York. He racked up 109 receptions, 1,204 yards, and 7 touchdowns. This was all with extremely inconsistent quarterback play. Even if the Giants sign Winston, he will not be their quarterback of the future. However, the experience Nabers could gain from Winston being his quarterback would be invaluable and important to the future of the Giants franchise.

Negatives

Regardless of how he plays, Jameis Winston is not the New York Giants quarterback of the future. He is currently 31 years old and the rest of the Giants roster is not near contending. It might be worth drafting a quarterback and playing for the future rather than signing a veteran like Winston.

Another negative of Winston is his turnovers. He has turned the ball over at a ridiculous rate in his career. Winston is the only player ever to have a season with at least 30 passing touchdowns and 30 interceptions. Last year, he threw 12 interceptions in 7 starts. The Giants will likely have one of the highest turnover rates in the league if they sign Jameis Winston as their starting quarterback.
