In a spark of good news, the Tennessee Titans have announced that they will be using their first-round pick. In all likelihood, they will be drafting Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward. This is good news for the Cleveland Browns. The Browns will have their choice of Penn State defensive end Abdul Carter or Colorado’s unicorn receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter. There are really no wrong choices here.
It is a great sign for Andrew Berry to resist the temptation to trade up to the number one pick. The discipline and self-confidence have paid off. In an ironic twist, teams are now calling the Browns to offer a king’s ransom for their pick. Now that Tennessee is going to take Cam Ward, it has shaken out the rest of the field for the Browns.
So what would it take to take away the number to pick from Cleveland??
A King’s ransom for sure.
Travis Hunter will probably be the Browns’ pick if they use the second overall pick. But let’s speculate a little bit. Say the New York Giants offered the third overall pick plus a third rounder this year, plus a third rounder next year for the Browns’ second overall pick. That is an offer that you would have to think about. Abdul Carter would be a great second plan. A generational talent like that at defensive end, paired with Myles Garnett, would be a great way to add talent, plus add draft capital. You know, Andrew Berry would have to study this one through.
But let’s say it’s a team further down the line.
Let’s say Pittsburgh gets tired of the Aaron Rodgers drama and wants to take a quarterback. Pittsburgh could offer the 20th overall pick, plus a third rounder this year, plus future draft picks. They would have to offer a King’s Ransom, but that’s exactly what the Browns would need. It would hurt to give up a chance to draft Hunter or Carter. But if you could turn this into a haul, you also have to. Football is won by building teams. And the best way to build a great team is to have a whole ton of picks. The Browns could turn the second overall pick into a dump truck load of premium picks. You would have to consider it.
If everything holds true to form, the Browns will be drafting Travis Hunter with the second overall pick. But as we all know, usually nothing holds true to form. Andrew Berry is a wheeler and dealer. And if he gets offered a load of premium picks for the number two overall pick, he will probably do it.
The good news is that the rest of the draft is pretty good, too.
This is a rather deep year for talent. That means that the Browns’ picks are in a great position. You can still get some good starters from the second and third rounds. And the Browns are picking high in the second and third rounds. I would see the second overall pick being a lot more tradable than the Browns’ picks in the second and third rounds. Andrew Barry usually hits those picks anyway. There’s no point in trading these premium picks unless you get offered a King’s ransom in return. Cleveland is in the position of getting to pick and choose offers. That is a good position to be in.
In conclusion, the Browns have a lot of cards on the table. And a lot of these cards are aces. What the Browns do with them is going to determine if we have a great team in a year or two. That is what makes this draft so interesting.
