NFL free agency: Browns roster could have need, interest in newly released RB

Zack Moss had his best season in 2023 and could help Browns roster quickly

The Cleveland Browns have a number of concerning issues on the offensive side of the ball, a week and a half into training camp. Unfortunately, the defense has added some concerns with the injury to CB Martin Emerson Jr. and the retirement of LB Jordan Hicks out of nowhere. The Browns have to hope for internal development at both positions but could look to NFL free agency for a cornerback.

While the questions on offense were known heading into training camp, most believed that the running back spot was solid with rookie Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson joining veterans Jerome Ford and Pierre Strong. Judkins’ domestic violence charge and injuries at the position have upended that idea, leading to Cleveland signing the UFL rushing touchdown leader from a year ago.

On Wednesday, another running back option hit the NFL free agency market when the Cincinnati Bengals released Zack Moss:

Bengals released veteran RB Zack Moss, who played in eight games with six starts for Cincinnati last season. Moss had 74 rushing attempts for 242 yards and two TDs last season.

Last offseason, coming off his best season, Moss signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Bengals with the hopes that he would help replace Joe Mixon. After 183 carries, 794 yards and five touchdowns with the Indianapolis Colts in 2023, Moss sustained a broken neck last season and is working his way back into football shape after being limited since the injury.

If he is healthy, Moss could be a capable stopgap measure for the Browns (once he is able to work his way back into football shape). Moss noted that he wants to continue playing, despite the injury, and has been working to be ready to play as soon as possible.
