On Monday, the Cleveland Browns signed Diontae Johnson to a one-year deal.
The 28-year-old had quite the tumultuous 2024 with brief stints in Carolina, Baltimore, and Houston. While that doesn’t sound great, especially considering his drama with the Ravens and eventual release, Johnson adds much-needed depth to the Browns’ receiving corps.
Outside of Jerry Jeudy and Cedric Tillman last season, the Browns severely lacked a reliable third option to make game-winning plays. The fact that the Browns passed on drafting a receiver heightens this need. Johnson brings a proven track record of success in providing a spark from the WR3 position.
During his time in Pittsburgh, Johnson amassed 424 receptions for over 4,000 yards with 25 touchdowns in five seasons. He even received Pro Bowl honors in 2021. He has a knack for getting open in big spots and delivering despite not having a competent quarterback for much of his career, which remains to be seen for the 2025 Browns.
All things considered, this feels like a sneaky good move for the Browns. It’s a low-risk deal with real upside. If Johnson can return to some semblance of his days in Pittsburgh, he could quietly become a difference-maker for an offense in desperate need of difference-makers.
