The Cleveland Browns reportedly added depth to their backfield.
Per Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz, the Browns are signing D’Onta Foreman. The running back joins Cleveland after playing nine games for the Chicago Bears last season.
Injuries stalled the third-round pick’s early trajectory with the Houston Texans. Foreman scored two touchdowns in the final game of his rookie season before tearing his Achilles.
He played just one game in 2018 and none the following year before tallying 100 yards for the Tennessee Titans in 2020. Foreman received a more significant role when replacing an injured Derrick Henry late in the 2021 campaign.
A healthy 2022 allowed Foreman to accrue a career-high 914 rushing yards on 203 carries for the Carolina Panthers. Foreman turned that season into a $3 million deal with Chicago.
After missing four straight games early in the season, Foreman briefly seized a larger spotlight in the fall. However, he finished with 502 scrimmage yards and five touchdowns with just 3.9 yards per carry.
Foreman provides another option to a Browns backfield that lost Nick Chubb to a gruesome injury early last season. The star running back’s recovery status is unclear after undergoing two knee surgeries.
Cleveland ranked 12th in rushing yards (with the NFL’s fourth-most attempts) behind Jerome Ford, Kareem Hunt, and Pierre Strong Jr. Ford and Strong remain on the roster, and the Browns also signed Nyheim Hines last week.
The Browns have gathered plenty of alternatives if Chubb isn’t ready to start the 2024 season.
