The Cleveland Browns reportedly “fear” that third-year tight end Stephen Carlson suffered a season-ending knee injury during Saturday night’s preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to ESPN’s Jake Trotter.
Carlson, 24, was expected to make the Browns final roster as the fourth tight end after a fantastic start to training camp, per Trotter. However, if this knee injury does indeed knock him out for the entire 2021 season, his status in Cleveland will be up in the air.
The former Princeton tight end went down in the second quarter of the Browns’ preseason victory over the Jaguars. He limped off the field and later left the stadium in Jacksonville in a knee brace and on crutches, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski had no update on Carlson’s MRI results during his press conference on Sunday afternoon, but Trotter’s report doesn’t bode well for the young tight end.

Carlson is entering his third year with the Browns after he joined the team in 2019 as an undrafted free agent out of Princeton. In his first two seasons with the organization, he’s played in 25 games and made six catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.
As Trotter reports, the 2021 campaign was shaping up to another productive one for Carlson, so the Browns will need to find a way to round out their tight end depth without the 24-year-old in the picture. Austin Hooper, David Njoku and Harrison Bryant are poised to fill the top three spots, but the fourth position will now likely be up for grabs.
