TE Stephen Carlson cleared to workout, takes visit with Giants

June 8, 2022 by Browns Wire

While there are a few huge questions at the top of the Cleveland Browns roster, the bottom of the 53-man will be interesting as well. How will the team deal with having five quality running backs? What receivers will make the team? After cutting Andy Janovich, is Johnny Stanton certain to make the team or will they have no fullbacks?

The tight end room is also very interesting after newly re-signed David Njoku and Harrison Bryant. After the release of Austin Hooper, the Browns did not add a significant player at the position.

Of most interest is Marcus Santos-Silva, the former college basketball player signed shortly after the draft. Santos-Silva looked good in a limited highlight video but is unlikely to be ready to contribute after not playing the game since his freshman year of high school.

After that, Miller Forristall and Nakie Griffin-Stewart are the only other depth players at the position with neither having much experience.

Last year, Stephen Carlson was slotted in as the team’s fourth tight end but tore his ACL in the preseason. Carlson is cleared to workout again but, instead of returning to Cleveland, will visit with the New York Giants:

Former #Browns TE Stephen Carlson, who tore his ACL in a preseason game last year, has been officially cleared to return to football activities and will work out for the #Giants today, per source.

The Browns could still bring Carlson back but taking a visit with another team does not bode well for that possibility.

For now, Cleveland is banking on Njoku and Bryant to carry the majority of the load at the position with the hope one of the younger guys can provide support. It is a position we could see the front office look to address during training camp as other teams make cuts from their rosters.
