Brian Hoyer is taking exception to Johnny Manziel’s recent comments about the dynamic in the Browns’ quarterback room back in 2014.
During a recent appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast, the former Heisman Trophy winner claimed that Hoyer didn’t “help” him as a rookie because it was finally his chance to have a starting job of his own and that “The QB room was not a home for me” because of Hoyer’s demeanor.
On Tuesday’s “Good Morning Football,” the 38-year-old QB shared his recollection of events in Cleveland and it painted a bit of a different picture.
I’m on my vacation last week in Florida and I get a text from Mac Jones and he goes, ‘Hey, funny I didn’t get this treatment as a rookie.’ ..Look, I’ll be honest, Johnny’s right, that was an opportunity for me to go out and be the starter for my hometown team, but I was kind of apathetic toward him I would say. I didn’t go out of my way to be a jerk to him, but in the same sense, I was trying to win this job and go out and perform the best I could. I feel sorry that he feels that way about it.
I always looked at it like, I never had any animosity toward Johnny. If anything, it was toward the owner and the GM who were always trying to push him ahead of me when clearly he wasn’t ready and I was gonna be the starter. It’s unfortunate that that left a bad taste in his mouth, but like I said, never had any animosity toward Johnny. I feel bad that he feels that way, but I don’t really recall it being that way, either.
The Browns moved on from Hoyer after Manziel’s first season to clear the decks for their No. 1 pick but he’d only go on to appear in nine games in 2015; the last of his NFL career.
