Baker Mayfield’s time as the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns came to an end the moment the team acquired Deshaun Watson. And yet, the former No. 1 overall pick remains on their roster.
ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler provided an update on Mayfield’s trade market this week. Teams interested in Mayfield want the Browns to pay part of Mayfield’s salary.
If the Browns are unwilling to pay a portion of Mayfield’s salary, teams will just have to hope that he gets released.
It’s not really a surprise to hear that NFL teams don’t want to pay Mayfield’s $18 million base salary for the 2022 season. That’s a lot of money to spend in addition to trading away a draft pick.
“It should’ve been a red flag when the Texans didn’t want Baker back in the Deshaun trade. They have, like, the league’s 29th best starter and said ‘no, we’re good,’” Ben Axelrod of WKYC 3News tweeted.

Browns fans, meanwhile, are just hopeful the front office can find a trade suitor before it’s too late.
“Cleveland waited too long and refused to trade OBJ last year,” one fan tweeted. “It blew up in their face. Berry/KS are great but this would end the same way. Move the dude asap.”

“Of course they are,” another fan wrote. “This is just a matter of which front offices are more patient/stubborn.”

The Browns are not in a rush to move Mayfield. They can play the waiting game for at least the next month or two.
As for the teams interested in Mayfield, they may have to look elsewhere for an upgrade at quarterback if the Browns are unwilling to budge.
