Would an Odell Beckham Jr. Comeback Be Good For The Browns?

June 5, 2022 by Cleveland Sports Talk

There are some Cleveland comebacks that are good. These are such as the LeBron James comeback that ended up with the team winning a title back in 2016. Something that this city will never forget and cherish forever.

Shifting gears and there is talk of a possible return of wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to the Browns.

According to Cleveland.com, the Super Bowl-winning receiver is “open to the possibility” of a reunion with the Browns because everything he likes about the franchise is still there.

Now, Odell played on the Browns from ’19-’21 and was certainly not as good as he was with the New York Giants. A lot of this is to blame because of quarterback Baker Mayfield who struggled to mesh with the star. In the original trade, the Giants received first and third-round picks in the 2019 NFL draft, along with safety Jabrill Peppers.

In 2022, the Browns ended up cutting the receiver and the LA Rams picked him up for the remaining eight games. He had 27 catches for 305 yards and five catches. Additionally, everyone remembers that long TD catch in the Super Bowl that broke our hearts.

So, with the signing of quarterback Deshaun Watson, the idea of Beckham Jr. returning is certainly a thought. However, Watson has plenty of legal problems to deal with still. Those seem to be piling up without any type of decision by the NFL on a suspension for the upcoming season.

Here’s what head coach Kevin Stefanski said about an OBJ return: “I really like Odell. We’ll see how it all plays out.”

Odell has knee injuries to deal with and it isn’t easy to return from an ACL tear. However, if the veteran is actually completely healthy, he could be great alongside Amari Cooper and Donovan Peoples-Jones.

OBJ is a character and everyone knows that from his time in Cleveland and simply paying attention to the NFL. There are so many “ifs” that play into this possible return. To close, let’s list them:

If OBJ is actually healthy enough to play to his full potential.

If Baker Mayfield is on the roster or even plays for the Browns.

If Deshaun Watson gets a huge suspension.

If OBJ can stay healthy.

If OBJ actually wants to be in Cleveland.

That’s a lot to deal with and it’s up to the Browns if they would be prepared for that drama or if they just want to keep moving in a direction without the receiver on the roster. If all of those factors work out, it could certainly be good for the Browns.

Like so much else here in Cleveland. Let’s wait and see what ends up happening.
