The former Kentucky star is looking for his chance to break through to the NBA.
Former Kentucky point guard Ashton Hagans will get another shot at the NBA with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ summer league squad, according to a report from Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes. This news follows after the Cavaliers added Florida State’s Malik Osborne to their Las Vegas Summer League team, according to Jon Chepkevich of Rookie Scale.
The Minnesota Timberwolves waived Hagans in mid-February last season after he was one of five players suspended by the Iowa Wolves, the Timberwolves’ G League affiliate, for violating team protocols in the G League bubble He was replaced by fellow former Kentucky Wildcat guard Isaiah Briscoe.
After that, he joined the Raptors 905, the G League affiliate of the Toronto Raptors, for the 2021-22 G League season. In 17 appearances, Hagans averaged 11.8 points, 5.8 assists and 2.1 steals in 28.2 minutes per game.
Playing in 67 career games for Kentucky with 59 starts, Hagans averaged 9.4 points, 5.2 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game all while helping lead the Wildcats to a 55-13 record over two seasons. For his collegiate career, Hagans ranks No. 12 all-time in assists (351) and 25th all-time in steals (119) for the Kentucky program as well.
As it currently stands, the Cavaliers have five players on their summer league roster, including the rookie trio of Ochai Agbaji, Isaiah Mobley and Khalifa Diop. Unlike last year, it appears Cleveland will be rolling with a true point guard on their roster in Hagans. While he did have two appearances with the Timberwolves, averaging only 2.0 minutes per game, this could be his opportunity to finally take his game to the next level.
