Cavaliers officially sign Luke Travers to two-way deal

Travers will be back this season.

The Cleveland Cavaliers announced they have signed Australian forward Luke Travers to another two-way deal this season.

Travers has been with the team for the previous three Summer Leagues. Last year was his first season in the NBA. He primarily played in the G-League but was called up for 12 professional games. Travers averaged 15.7 points, 9.8 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 4.1 turnovers per game with the Charge.

There are promises in Travers’ all-around game. He’s a 6’8” prospect who can do a little bit of everything. The rebounding, playmaking and general defensive abilities make Travers a valuable lottery ticket. The issue is cashing in those skills at the NBA level.

His crutch has always been the three-point shot, where he connected on only 26.7% of his attempts in the G-League. Without a viable jumper or a strong interior game to compensate — Travers has been unable to stay on the floor. There’s only so much a non-scoring forward can provide in the NBA if they aren’t truly elite at any other skill.

Travers will turn 24 in September. There’s plenty of time for him to grow. Adding more to his defensive toolkit or finding a way to become more of a scoring threat would be a significant improvement.

For now, the Cavs are betting on that potential. They’ve given Travers another two-way contract, meaning we’ll likely see him in Las Vegas and with the Charge again this year.

Cleveland has yet to announce their other two two-way spots. We know they have signed the 49th pick, Tyrese Proctor, to a standard contract — and declined another two-way deal for Emoni Bates.
