Cavs NBA Draft Profile: Cameron Matthews

Matthews is a high-energy player.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have a pair of second-round NBA Draft picks this summer. We’re profiling several prospects to keep an eye on as we approach the big day.

Today, we’re focusing on Cameron Matthews.

Who is Cameron Matthews?

A five-year player out of Mississippi State, Matthews was a high-motor defender who earned multiple SEC All-Defensive honors during his collegiate career. He’s flashed some on-ball playmaking but hasn’t shown any reason to feel confident in his jumper.

At 6’7”, Matthews might be more capable of overcoming those limitations than other defensive specialists.

Where is Matthews expected to go in the draft?

Matthews is an older prospect. Without any high-end offensive talent, this makes him a late second round talent.

What do the experts say about Matthews?

Maxwell Baumbach of No Ceilings:

“Cameron Matthews is as versatile and disruptive defender as you can find in college basketball. He makes life a living hell for opposing offenses.”

“Matthews has been on my radar for years. And every year, I’ve hoped for one thing—a jump shot. It’s never come along. During his five college seasons, Matthews has taken 101 total threes, and he’s only made 21 of them.”

Ersin’s NBA Draft Newsletter:

“He fits the mold of more teams seeking complementary stout defenders to support their stars. His NBA-ready body, mature defensive game, and sample size of playing in a limited role make it easier to convince front offices this summer.”

How could Matthews help the Cavs?

The Cavs have a solid group of seven they can rely on in the playoffs. The starting five plus De’Andre Hunter and Ty Jerome is steady enough. But they desperately need some size at the end of their bench. Dean Wade is their only other playable forward — and he’s been underwhelming, at best, in the playoffs.

Matthews could be an immediate fix at this position. He’s got an NBA-ready body that should translate to the defensive end right away. His defensive skills as an athletic 6’7” wing would make him a useful piece to the puzzle.

Cleveland wouldn’t be as worried about Matthews’ three-point limitations as other teams. They can go small with Mobley spacing the floor at center. This makes second-units featuring Matthews more tangible than others.

Adding another depth piece at a position of need would be huge. Matthews is a sturdy defender who might even be able to add some playmaking, as well. This is certainly worth a chance if he’s available at 49 or 58.
