Almansa is a big the Cavs could use.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have a pair of second-round NBA Draft picks this summer. We’re profiling several prospects to keep an eye on as we approach the big day.

Today, we’re focusing on Izan Almansa.

Who is Izan Almansa?

Almansa is a 6’10” Spanish prospect who skipped college to play for the G-League Ignite squad last year and the NBL this season. At 19 years old, Almansa has a raw game that’s built on a few solid fundamentals. He could be a potential lottery ticket for teams desperate for talent in the second round.

Where is Almansa expected to go in the draft?

Once upon a time, Almansa was a highly coveted prospect. But his stock has taken a severe hit over the last two years. His time in the G-League and NBL did not go as planned. Almansa is now expected to be a second round pick.

What do the experts say about Almansa?

Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports:

“Almansa is an accomplished international big who projects as a versatile offensive hub and prolific rebounder, though sooner than later his production will need to start matching his flashes of upside.”

Ersin’s NBA Draft Newsletter:

“Despite an underwhelming season at the G League Ignite followed by an inconsistent year at Perth, Almansa’s physical tools, high feel for the game, and clear role make it easier for NBA scouts to bet on him. I expect Almansa to sign a guaranteed deal regardless of missing out on the first round.”

How could Almansa help the Cavs?

Alamansa is an explosive big who has shown enough feel for the game to make him an interesting prospect. His role would be simplified in Cleveland. All the Cavs would need is a few quality minutes off the bench where Almansa set bone-crushing screens and rolled to the rim with authority.

This is easier said than done, of course. The Cavs aren’t able to afford a long runway for a younger prospect to find their wings. They’re looking to compete for a championship. That means Almansa might not have a wide enough margin for error to stay on the floor.

Still, Almansa’s skills would translate to Cleveland. At least, theoretically. A mobile, high-energy player with size and athleticism is exactly what the Cavs’ bench could use.
