The Cavaliers have traded DeAndre Hunter to the Sacramento Kings for PG Dennis Schröder and SG Keon Ellis.
This was a three-team deal that included the Chicago Bulls, according to a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania. The Bulls acquired PF Dario Saric and two future second-round draft picks.
This trade does multiple things for the Cavs. It provides significantly more reliable backcourt depth behind PG Darius Garland and SG Donovan Mitchell. The transaction also clears about $50 million in salary and luxury tax savings. However, the Cavs still remain the only team in the NBA in the dreaded second apron. The team might possibly look to make more roster moves in order to avoid the penalties that come with being in the second apron, such as not being able to acquire a player in a sign-and-trade transaction and not being able to use trade exceptions from previous seasons.
Schröder, who averaged 12.8 ppg and 5.3 apg this season for the Kings, can provide an offensive spark to a bench unit that desperately needs it. On the season so far, the Cavs’ bench has averaged 32.9 ppg, the eighth-fewest in the NBA. He’s averaged double-digit points in each of the past twelve seasons.
Ellis’ stats might not blow many away at first glance, but his playstyle is exactly what the Cavs need. Last season, Ellis proved himself to be one of the NBA’s best 3 and D options. The third-year guard out of Alabama had the eighth-highest three-point percentage at 43.3%, all while ranking in the top ten for steals per game with 1.5. While his overall efficiency has dipped this year, if he can capture last season’s form, the Cavaliers could finally be due for a deep postseason run.
