With Game 7 of the NBA Finals to tip off in less than 24 hours, there’s a bit of NBA History to reflect on.
Sunday night will mark the 20th instance that the NBA Finals go to a Game 7. Out of the 19 times a Game 7 takes place, only four road teams were lucky enough to call themselves victorious.
The four teams to emerge as winners?
Four Road Teams to Make NBA History In The NBA Finals
The 1969 Boston Celtics in Los Angeles against the Lakers. [The Lakers’ Jerry West was chosen as Finals MVP despite losing the series.]
The 1974 Boston Celtics in Milwaukee against the Bucks. [The first of two Larry O’Brien trophies the team would win in the 70s.]
The 1978 Washington Bullets in Seattle against the SuperSonics. [Today, the arcs of the two franchises are completely different. The Bullets, now the Wizards, are among the bottom feeders of the Eastern Conference. The SuperSonics, now the Thunder, are looking to raise their second franchise championship banner on Sunday.]
And finally, the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers against the Golden State Warriors in Oakland. [NBA History in its own right, on two factors. One, the Warriors were coming off the best regular season record in the NBA at 73-9. The Cavaliers also pulled off a miraculous 3-1 series comeback, becoming the first team in NBA history to accomplish the feat.]
Now, the attention shifts to the Loud House, which is PayCom Center in Oklahoma City. The Thunder will look to bring home their first Larry O’Brien trophy to the Sooner State Capital. Meanwhile, the Indiana Pacers will be aiming to secure their first NBA title in franchise history.
The two words a sports fan dreams of hearing: Game 7.
It will all culminate in NBA history on Sunday night. And the end of another incredible NBA season awaits both teams. Game 7 will always be a night to remember, no matter the side a person is on.
