Collin Sexton, Cavs at standstill in contract talks

August 9, 2022 by Cavs Nation

The Cleveland Cavaliers are in good shape heading into the 2022-23 season. But there is still one player they’d like to re-sign: Collin Sexton. The guard is arguably the best free agent left on the market and he’s yet to ink a new deal with the Cavs

Unfortunately, it appears Sexton is still at a standstill with the team, sources told Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com. They want to give him a three-year, $40 million extension, but Sexton and his agent Rich Paul believe that’s not enough.

Sexton missed most of 2021-22 with a knee injury but the Cavs still flourished, making it to the play-in tournament. If it wasn’t for several health setbacks, J.B. Bickerstaff’s squad would’ve finished as a top-six seed in the East.

While the backcourt is looking solid with Darius Garland running the point, there is no questioning Sexton’s ability. After all, this is a player who averaged over 24 points per night two seasons ago. He’s the real deal and given how much Garland has improved, it would be scary hours to see these two together with frontcourt duo Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.

Sexton is an RFA which means the Cavs can match any offer sheet for him. He could also accept a $7.2 million qualifying offer and then try his luck in free agency next summer. With that being said, it seems logical for both sides to come to an agreement. Sexton still fits into Cleveland’s plans and absolutely makes them even better as they look to steer clear of the play-in altogether and make the playoffs in 2023.
