Darius Garland Building His All-NBA Case With New Achievement

January 16, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Jan 14, 2025; Indianapolis, Indiana, USA; Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland (10) reacts in the second half against the Indiana Pacers at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Darius Garland continues to make his case as one of the NBA’s elite guards. Garland was named the NBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week for Week 12, marking his second such honor this season. He becomes the first player in the Eastern Conference to win the award twice this year. Over the Cavaliers’ 2-1 stretch, Garland posted impressive numbers, averaging 26.0 points and 7.7 assists per game while shooting 52% from the field.

The Cavaliers’ standout guard has been a model of consistency. His season averages—21.0 points, 6.7 assists, and 1.1 steals—highlight his all-around impact. He’s shooting an impressive 49.8% from the field, 42.4% from three, and 90.5% from the free throw line. These splits put him on the verge of the coveted 50/40/90 club, a benchmark of elite efficiency.

Near-Historic Efficiency

If Garland maintains these shooting percentages, he will become the first Cavalier to join the 50/40/90 club since Mark Price in the 1988-89 season. Only a handful of players in NBA history have reached this milestone. Garland’s near-achievement underscores his unique combination of scoring efficiency and playmaking ability.

He is also the only NBA player averaging at least 20 points while shooting 49% from the field, 40% from three, and 90% from the free throw line. This further highlights how well he’s playing.

Leading the Cavaliers to Success

The Cavaliers boast an impressive 34-5 record, the best in the league. Garland’s leadership has been critical to their success. His stellar week included leading the team to a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, snapping their 15-game win streak.

While the Cavaliers’ 12-game win streak ended against the Indiana Pacers, Garland’s impact during that stretch remained undeniable. His performances have elevated Cleveland to true contender status in the Eastern Conference.

Historic Company

Garland’s latest honor places him in exclusive company among Cavaliers legends. He joins LeBron James (42 awards), Kyrie Irving (4), and Donovan Mitchell (4) as the only Cavs players to win the Player of the Week award three or more times. His award marks the 70th time a Cavaliers player has received this recognition.

Strengthening His All-Star Case

Garland’s Player of the Week recognition strengthens his case for a second All-Star selection. The five-time All-Star is looking to return to the showcase event for the first time since the 2021-22 season. Despite his stellar play, Garland ranked only ninth among Eastern Conference guards in the second fan returns for All-Star voting.

This disconnect between his impact and All-Star recognition could change as Garland continues to deliver statement performances. His recent 40-point, nine-assist effort against the Toronto Raptors highlighted his ability to dominate games. Awards like Player of the Week only bolster his All-Star candidacy.

Eyeing an All-NBA Spot

Beyond the All-Star Game, Garland has positioned himself as a potential All-NBA candidate. His combination of efficiency, scoring, and playmaking sets him apart. Few guards in the league can match his current form.

As the Cavaliers aim for playoff success, Garland’s contributions will remain pivotal. His steady leadership, historic efficiency, and knack for clutch performances make him one of the league’s most valuable players this season.

Darius Garland Belongs in the All-NBA Conversation

Garland’s second Player of the Week honor this season cements his status as a rising star. His near-historic efficiency and leadership have propelled the Cavaliers to the NBA’s best record. Darius Garland’s case for All-Star and All-NBA recognition grows stronger with each standout performance.
