I remember back in the day loving the Cleveland Indians pitchers. Especially CC Sabathia, one of the best there ever was in this storied franchise.
Yes, I took pride in not just knowing CC but also what it stood for in Carsten Charles. Quiz fellow Cleveland fans and see how many of them know what the “CC” stands for or even if they remember the starter from years ago in The Land.
CC played for the Indians from 01-08, then a year with the Milwaukee Brewers and finally from 09-19 with the New York Yankees to finish out a historic career.
His total win-loss record is 251/161, he had a 3.74 ERA and a whopping 3,093 strikeouts. “On April 30, 2019, Sabathia became the seventeenth pitcher in MLB history to reach 3,000 strikeouts and the third left-hander to do so (joining Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton).”
Check out these achievements:
- 6× All-Star (2003, 2004, 2007, 2010–2012)
- AL Cy Young Award (2007)
- ALCS MVP (2009)
- 2× MLB wins leader (2009, 2010)
The impact Sabathia made in Cleveland was tremendous. He was truly a pitcher who will never be forgotten in his days with the Indians as a starter.
Sabathia was feared by opposing hitters as that left hander with his ruthless cutter and also vicious slider and sinker.
It’s certainly great that this now-Guardians organization is recognizing someone so amazing at pitching. After all, 109 wins and 19 complete games came with the Wahoos. Sabathia is the 48th member now elected into the Guardians Hall of Fame.
Now, Sabathia is retired at the age of 43 years old. CC said this about the news of his induction:
“Grateful beyond words. Thank you Cleveland – the organization, fans, staff, coaches, players, and everyone who has played a part in my journey. Honored to join the @CleGuardians HOF.”
Other Hall of Fame members (some not all) include Sandy Alomar Jr., Carlos Baerga and Albert Belle Also favorites of mine include Jim Thome, Kenny Lofton and Omar Vizquel. Pitchers are Charles Nagy and Cy Young. Full list click HERE
Let’s hope this list will continue to grow as other phenomenal players continue to get recognized as the years go on.
I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to be at the plate facing CC. However, I would’ve run and got his autograph instead of trying to hit his pitches.
One again, congratulations to Carsten Charles Sabathia for a historic career here in Cleveland and in the entire MLB throughout the years. Fun fact: “On April 6, 2022, Sabathia was hired by Major League Baseball to serve as a special assistant to commissioner Rob Manfred.”
Oh and CC could also hit the baseball himself…
