As if things couldn’t get any worse for the Cleveland Guardians, news about starting pitcher Luis Ortiz broke that makes it so…
“The Guardians have been notified that Luis Ortiz has been placed on leave per an agreement with the Players Association due to an ongoing league investigation,” the team said in a statement. “The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time and will respect the league’s confidential investigative process.” -ESPN
Ortiz this year has gone 4-9 with a 4.35 ERA this year. While his record is not a good one, he’s been a solid member of the rotation this season and those struggles can be blamed on the offense, in part.
More details will likely come out as time goes on and this new investigation continues. Sadly, it’s not as if this ballclub is contenting for a World Series or even a playoff spot for that matter, so his departure will not be missed in that regard. It’s just another stain on the season itself.
Ortiz’s latest start came against the St. Louis Cardinals where he went seven innings, gave up four runs on six hits, had seven strikeouts and a single walk. It ultimately resulted in a 5-0 loss. (June 27th)
Currently, the Guardians are 40-44 and 12.5 games behind the first-place Detroit Tigers in the AL Central. They’ve lost six in a row and play against the Chicago Cubs at 8:05 CLE Time. It was actually Ortiz that was supposed to start tonight…not anymore.
We’ll keep you posted on any news with this upcoming investigation about Ortiz and what it amounts to…
