Harrison Barnes among 3 defensive stalwarts named as trade targets to Cavs

May 21, 2022 by Cavs Nation

Harrison Barnes, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, Cavs, NBA Free Agency

The Cleveland Cavaliers are coming off a promising season where they narrowly missed the playoffs after losing in the Play-In Tournament to the Atlanta Hawks. Nonetheless, there is little doubt they would’ve been in the postseason if it wasn’t for injuries to notable players including Collin Sexton, Ricky Rubio, and Jarrett Allen for a short period of time towards the end of the campaign. The next step for this young Cavs group is to get better this offseason and that starts with free agency.

According to Evan Dammerell of Right Down Euclid, Cleveland is interested in a trio of 3 and D players in Harrison Barnes, Gary Trent Jr, and Malik Beasley.

“League sources say that players like Toronto’s Gary Trent Jr., Sacramento’s Harrison Barnes or Minnesota’s Malik Beasley are also viable options the Cavs via trade as well,” Dammarell wrote. “But, again, due to the financial complications involving those aforementioned players, drafting someone could also be a path too. The next few months could be interesting for the Cavaliers but, there will be more to come next week on that.”

As noted by Dammarell, it might not be easy trading for any of these three and the draft could very well be another option for finding more depth for this exciting Cavs core. They were awarded the No. 14 overall pick in the NBA Draft lottery on Tuesday and also have two selections in the second round of next month’s draft.

The Cavs were one of the best defensive teams in the Association thanks to their Twin Towers duo in the frontcourt of Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. Wing depth is certainly a need and there are lots of viable options in the 2022 draft class as well, including Ochai Agbaji and Johnny Davis, just to name a couple. Both are solid defensive cogs who can shoot it from deep.

Needless to say, it will be very interesting to see how much better the Cavs can get this summer. The sky is truly the limit with this team.
