Now that was a disappointing end to the season for the Cleveland Cavaliers. A team that was the #1 seed in the East, with 64 wins in the regular season and subsequently a first-round sweep of the Miami Heat. Things were looking good heading into the second round against the Indiana Pacers. However, injuries, matchups and just getting outmatched led to a “Gentlemen’s Sweep” of 4-1. The Pacers were 50-32 on the year and in the #4 seed, fresh off a series win over the Milwaukee Bucks, 4-1.
My big thing throughout this entire regular season about the Cavs was that I was very impressed with how the team played in the regular season, but I kept saying that the team was going to have to prove it when it counts most in the postseason. Certainly, I wasn’t saying they didn’t have a chance, but simply that the postseason was a different animal and to be prepared for what was to come despite their excellence throughout the regular season.
Look what happened…
Many will cite the injuries and that’s reasonable in part, but the team had most of its roster for most of the series and still got throttled.
So, now what? What should this team do?
Well, it appears that the front office is sticking with the “core four” of these current Cavs that couldn’t get it done. That’s fine, but I hope the team will make some deals to obviously improve the squad. If the team sits on its hands and doesn’t really change the roster much, the entire next season is just going to be a bunch of saying that it doesn’t matter, cause they won’t be able to handle the playoffs or stay healthy and such. So that’s why next year sucks already. That is, unless changes are made to get this team ready for next year’s playoffs.
Sadly, I don’t think this roster can currently win a title. I don’t believe Donovan Mitchell has the ability to carry a team all the way to glory like, say, a LeBron James did back in 2016. Let’s see what happens this off-season and hopefully, some exciting acquisitions will make looking forward to next year fun.
Even so, one has the right to be disappointed with the way these playoffs ended. It’s certainly a process that can take many years to perfect. What’s to come this off-season is extremely important. My biggest concern is honestly if this current roster can stay healthy and there’s no way of knowing that until it happens throughout the playoffs next year. Just like I cited about these playoffs, it just, well, has to happen.
