Is Jose Ramirez’s Thumb an Actual Issue Moving Forward?

June 24, 2022 by Cleveland Sports Talk

Cleveland Guardians All-Star Jose Ramirez was out during the weekend against the Los Angeles Dodgers due to a sore thumb injury. Should we be concerned about Jose Ramirez’s thumb injury? Well, it’s not a significant concern, but it could be severe in the next couple of months if it doesn’t take care of in time.

Jose Ramirez was back in the Cleveland Guardians’ lineup Tuesday. Ramirez, batting third and playing third base, went 1-for-5 with a double against the Minnesota Twins. On Wednesday, he went 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. However, he combined for 2-for-9 in those last two games. It’s evident to me that Ramirez is not 100%.

We hope that this thumb injury doesn’t come haunting him later in the season. The Guardians would need to rally behind him regardless of what happens. The silver lining is that you have other guys who can step up, like Andres Gimenez and Steven Kwan, who can put the ball in play and drive in runs. Amed Rosario has also shown some production with the Guardians this season.

We understand that teams such as the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox are not going anywhere and will be fighting for the AL Central crown. However, I feel that Terry Francona will find a way to make it work. Francona is one of the best managers in the game. He’s one of the biggest reasons why the Guardians are having a solid season this far. The Guardians truly missed him being on the dugout last season. With the new playoff rules, the Guardians have a shot at making the postseason if they can keep everyone healthy, starting with their best player. I don’t know if Ramirez is the one who wants to play through pain or if he feels like he has to play it through because of the contract, but it’s a long season and we have to think about the bigger picture. Ramirez wants to win a World Series with this team.

Ramirez is hitting .302 with four triples, 16 homers and 62 RBIs. He’s fifth in the American League with a 1.023 OPS and third with a 3.4 WAR.
