After finishing this season with a 4-1 second-round loss to the Indiana Pacers, the 64-18 Cleveland Cavaliers were certainly disappointed in the way the season was finished. Yeah, there were the optimists saying great season blah blah blah and citing some good moments that occurred throughout the regular year.
My problem and I believe the issue with the team as a whole, is that there isn’t much belief in what we’ve got moving forward to next year and really even beyond that too.
Unless there are changes to the roster, I don’t think Donovan Mitchell and the rest of the Cavs have the ability to carry this team to the NBA Finals and ultimately win it all. After the series loss to the Pacers in five games, the star was quoted as saying…
“I told you during the year, we were gonna be judged off this,” Mitchell said, referencing the playoffs. “There’s gonna be a lot of talk. That’s what comes with it. And we didn’t capitalize. So now we’ve got to use this as motivation. Everybody’s going to write us off. Everybody in here. I mean, it’s not personal. So what are we going to do about it next year?” Via CLE Dot Com
I mean, I guess that’s the right attitude. What’s he going to say? ‘Oh, can’t wait to lose again next year. I don’t think I can handle winning in the playoffs and neither can my teammates.’ It wasn’t as if the team lost in seven games against a difficult Eastern Conference Finals opponent.
Well, unless things change in the offseason or some type of magical coaching strategy occurs, I just don’t see his strong attitude, sadly. I see another incredible regular season, but some type of similar result in the playoffs.
To the front office: let’s make some moves. A lot of them.
To these Cavs fans: I don’t blame you for being pessimistic at all after the way everything ended with those losses to the Pacers.
Now, let’s wait and see what happens because it unfortunately could be a similar result to the franchise.
There won’t be any belief until it’s proven by the team when it counts most and that won’t start until the changes are made. Even then, there will certainly be speculation in wondering if Donovan Mitchell can truly be the guy to lead a franchise.
I’d be open to blowing up the “core four” because of how bad that second round was… However, it’s they’re playing on keeping them, it’s those other building blocks that must change, because we’ve seen it turn for the worse very quickly.
