Removing The Three-Point Line? Partially?

June 25, 2025 by Cleveland Sports Talk

The NBA’s ratings are down this year. I, personally, just think it’s because the star power in the league is just not the same. Many of the greats are either retired or are in their final years of playing and just aren’t very good anymore. Sure, these NBA Finals themself were entertaining, but this is in regards to the entire year.

Now, before I get killed by people reading this. I am not demanding this to occur starting game one of this upcoming season. It’s simply just a few ideas that I think would help and it focuses on the three-point line.

Remember, the NBA implemented a three-point line for the 1979-1980 season. Thus, it didn’t start when basketball itself did.

What would I do?

My first idea is to implement three-less games. These are affairs between teams where the three is actually removed for that specific game and thus the interest would be in the grit and the grind of authentic basketball between teams.

Another alternative could feature a three-less quarter. It’s taking away the three-pointer for simply one quarter of the game that could be selected by the league.

Something, and this is getting very radical, would be considering a four-pointer. A shot distance that is even farther away than counts for four points.

These types of ideas, I feel, would make a league that needs to draw more interest get that very dynamic, especially from the younger generation that is growing up near the post-LeBron era.

Now, am I saying to just remove the three forever and always? No, I don’t think that would benefit the league. Moreover, I would keep the three throughout the playoffs and not allow those dynamics to be the determining factor in that intense competition. At least, not in the coming years.

Let’s have some fun.

Honestly, maybe it’s cause I sucked at the three point shot growing up and I’m still salty about that now? However, it’s worth a try moving forward in professional ball with the struggles of interest throughout.

I would like to see how current players and coaches would be receptive to the changes. Even so, think of the league many years ago and they all would’ve laughed at the ADDITION of the three-point line to begin with at that time. See how it all changed for the positive way back in the day.

Let’s watch if any type of changes are ever made and what the results are from it when it happens…if ever.
