Ricky Rubio Signs With the Cleveland Cavaliers

July 3, 2022 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Ricky Rubio signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday. The two sides agreed to a 3-year contract worth $18 million, or $6 million per season. This contract ties him down through the 2024-2025 season.

Ricky Rubio Signs With the Cleveland Cavaliers

Over his 11-year NBA career, Rubio has played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, and Phoenix Suns. He has put up 15.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game for his career. He was originally drafted in the first round, sixth overall out of the 2008 NBA draft by the Timberwolves. Last season he put up 13.1 points and 6.6 assists for the Cavaliers. Rubio tore his ACL just 34 games into the season with the Cavaliers, so it is unknown when he will suit up again.

Rubio enjoyed some of the best basketball of his career with the Cavaliers before he was flipped to the Indiana Pacers at the deadline. Rubio did not play in a game for the Pacers, and will instead return to Cleveland.

What This Means For the Future

Rubio is one of the better playmakers in the league when healthy. He has averaged over 7.5 assists per game for his career and can rebound decently for a guard. He’s also a 38.9 percent career three-point shooter and can space the floor well. Similar to last season, Rubio can be excellent in his role with Cleveland.

Cleveland outperformed their expectations last season, finding their way into the play-in tournament. Although they did not make the playoffs, hopes are high for the Cavaliers squad. First off, the team holds a number of young and talented players. Although said players are still improving their game, they’re already amongst the top of their positions in the league. Cleveland knows the importance of having veterans as well, especially when it comes to making the playoffs. Rubio will provide veteran leadership and depth.
