The Browns Just Made a Mistake.

January 29, 2026 by Cleveland Sports Talk

The Browns have found their new headcoach, and in doing so, have possibly ruined their team for the next few years. Todd Monken is going to become the new Browns head coach, taking over the role of Kevin Stefanski (who went to the Falcons). However, the Browns had to pass over our defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz to make this hire, who doesn’t seem very happy about the hiring. According to multiple sources, Jim may have already said goodbyes to coaches and players, and now wants out of the team. This may just be an anomaly, and Jim will stick around still, but if this is true, and Jim leaves the team, the Browns will have just made a huge mistake.

Who is Todd Monken

Todd Monken more recently was the offensive coordinator for the Ravens, and has played for the Browns once before as well in 2019 as the OC. Monken did lead the Ravens offense to multiple good seasons, bringing Lamar back into MVP talks and helping the Ravens really accelerate their offensive play. However, Monken didn’t perform very well with the Ravens last year, though their offense really suffered in a general way, and many believed he’d follow Harbaugh to the Giants. Monken is taking control of a really messed up team as well, with the offense being so lackluster last year, and the defense seeming to be coming up before falling back down throughout the season as well. The QB spot is obviously the biggest mark, as there is a small difference between Lamar Jackson and Shedeur Sanders. He may still be able to do what he did in Baltimore, but without anywhere near the same weapons, it’ll be far more difficult to pull off.

Why Is Jim Schwartz Considering Leaving

Jim (and rightfully so), is frustrated as he believes he was overlooked and ignored during the coaching hire. He was an obvious choice, and one who has performed very well with the Browns as well. Despite all that, he was ignored and left at DC despite all the things he’d done for the team. His frustration is understandable, as getting overlooked by the team that you worked so hard for and had pretty good success with as well has to be hard. He was the leading favorite to get the job once Udinski pulled out, and had no reason to be not chosen once he was the top pick. However, this anger and temper might be a reason why the Browns didn’t want him, or why many teams have looked past him. Fire is important for coaches, but an anger or temper can often be something teams do not want in their locker room. Even still, the Browns would have had him in their locker room regardless, just at a more important spot.

What Does This Mean for the Browns Future

In the worst case scenario, Jim does end up actually leaving the team. At that point, it’ll be a mess for at least two years, as the Browns scramble to find someone who can survive just a single year until a better prospect opens up. in those years, we can expect barely any wins, and likely mass firings of just about everyone imaginable. That is if Jim actually ends up leaving, which is still something we have to wait and see about. If he doesn’t this hire is likely not something that will end up being long term, and is more likely to be a bridge for the next few years. After that, the Browns more than likely will have their sights set on someone better, and probably have a much more appealing team for future candidates. The Browns likely aren’t going to get better than they are right now with this hire, and if Jim does end up leaving, expect a few good years of suffering ahead.
