Kevin Stefasnki was hired on January 13, 2020. Immediately, he made an impact by coaching the Browns to their first playoff win since 1995. However, the years following were not as promising.
The following season was plagued by an injury to the shoulder of Baker Mayfield. Baker had his worst season up until this point, and he was subsequently traded to the Carolina Panthers. The trade created room for Deshaun Watson to become the new QB1. The signing of Deshaun Watson has often been criticized by Kevin Stefanski, especially since his firing. The team struggled, and Deshaun was suspended for the first 11 games of the season, but 2023 was the year he came back.
2023 was a season of ups and downs for the team. Four quarterbacks started throughout the season, but the Browns made a late-season push and made the playoffs. Although they got blown out by the Texans, Kevin Stefanski still managed to win Coach of the Year while starting four different quarterbacks. The Offense looked solid, and the defense was amazing as always.
However, the Browns have not made the playoffs since then and Kevin Stefanski’s playcalling has been brought into question. A coach who was once thought of as a young mastermind simply couldn’t get his offense to perform. Without consistent quarterback play, the team is unable to create an offensive identity. A team that once had a Super Bowl window with Kevin Stefanski quickly dissipated into irrelevance.
Did the Browns give Kevin Stefanski a good roster after 2020-21?
No.
Was Kevin Stefanski the future of the Browns?
No.
Kevin Stefanski constantly produced teams that were sloppy, and his playcalling has been abysmal. He was able to save his job by giving up playing to his offensive coordinator. However, Kevin Stefanski needed to go, but he will not necessarily become a bad coach.
A situation like New York might be enticing to him. A young QB and RB core, allowing him to build a team around them, along with a young superstar WR in Malik Nabers. The Giants’ defensive line has been very good, with Brian Burns being the headliner. The team is young and in a great position, which might be the perfect fit for Kevin Stefanski… a similar position with his hiring in Cleveland.
Thank you, Kevin, for bringing a glimmer of hope to Cleveland
