Time For An Extention…Of The Wild Card?

October 3, 2025 by Cleveland Sports Talk

Yes, I am salty.

Let me preface this article by making that clear that I am disappointed in the Cleveland Guardians’ loss to the Detroit Tigers in the AL Wild Card Series.

However, even before the series started, I had these thoughts about how everything works. These teams play 162 entire games for the season and I just find it hard to understand how a baseball series of the playoffs can only be three games.

I would argue for a best-of-seven series or at least a best-of-five to allow the teams to really get a chance to compete against each other to the fullest extent. After all, this isn’t like a football season where it’s only 16 games and whatnot for the year…

Arguments against this are the scheduling that would have to be made in order for this to work. Additionally, the players would be extremely tired for the next series against a team just waiting to play while resting. Also, said team resting for having almost too much time off.

Even so, I think these could be worked out with days off and such after the series.

Let’s see if there are ever potential changes in the coming years to the playoffs in baseball. After all, “Major League Baseball (MLB) introduced the Wild Card in 1995 following a realignment into three divisions per league, which allowed the winningest non-division champion from each league to make the postseason.”

Thus, this hasn’t always been a part of the playoffs in baseball and changes were made all of those years ago to the way things were operated…

Yes, if the Guardians were able to win this past series against the Tigers, I would be a bit more satisfied with how the playoffs work. Even so, like I said, it was always a thought of mine even before the disappointment occurred recently.

Hey, as fans say, “there’s always next year,” and that remains true here in Cleveland.
