With one month almost gone in the 2025 season, there are still a few top MLB free agents available. But who could help the Guardians in their true positions of need?
Now, through said first month, or approximately 27 games, the Guardians are at 15-12. Their statistics show their drop-off is rather surprising, especially considering this was a team that made the ALCS last year.
According to Fangraphs, these are a few of the top free agents and here’s how they could each benefit the boys of Northeast Ohio.
Top MLB Free Agents: How Can They Benefit The Guardians?
Option No. 1: RP David Robertson
The first option on the list is David Robertson. Sure, he may be 40 years old, and he may not have the stuff he once had. But he is a reliable arm in the bullpen. And, as of now, the Guardians’ bullpen is a bit shaky to start off the year. Paul Sewald has not produced the best of numbers and Emmanuel Clase got a quick hook from the closer’s role. If Robertson can capture his old form, he may turn into a major anchor in the Cleveland pen.
Option No. 2: DH JD Martinez
The second surprising name on this list is JD Martinez. While his position listed is DH, he has proven in the past that he can play either corner outfield position. He can also supply some much-needed pop to an offense. However, one number that may scare teams away, including the Guardians, is that his valuation puts him at a $9 million contract for one year. Conversely, his bat speaks for itself, and could provide a nice punch to the Guardians’ offense.
Option No. 3: INF Matt Duffy
How about a versatile infielder who can play any spot? Well, except for catcher. The third option I would go for is Matt Duffy. On the negative side, he’s a relatively light-hitting guy in terms of power. But, on the positive side, he can play multiple positions, and his average for the career is a very respectable .277. He could also be a fairly cheap option to play anywhere on the infield.
Those would be the three options for the top MLB free agents for the Guardians to sign. There are still quite a few other options out there. But the names listed seem to make the most sense.
