On Friday night, former Alabama safety Caleb Downs announced that he’s committing to Ohio State. It’s a move that his father, Gary, definitely approves.

In fact, Downs’ father raved about the Buckeyes the day his son entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports shared Gary Downs’ comments about Ohio State once his son’s decision was official.

“You look at Ohio State, Jim Knowles comes in solidifies the defense and becomes a top five defense,” Gary Downs said. “You see what he implemented, the success and defense backs coach Tim Walton the familiarity there. Ryan Day what he’s done. Look at that program they’re right there.”

Caleb Downs had a special freshman season at Alabama, racking up 107 tackles, three passes defended, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

On paper, Ohio State should have one of the best defenses in the country next season. Downs is joining a secondary that’ll feature Denzel Burke and Jordan Hancock.

Alabama, on the other hand, will have to find a way to replace Downs’ production, which is much easier said than done.
