College football’s official Associated Press preseason top 25 poll was released on Monday afternoon.
There weren’t too many surprises inside the preseason top 25, at least at the top of the poll. The usual suspects – Alabama, Oklahoma, Clemson, Ohio State and Georgia – rounded out the top five.
The Crimson Tide are the reigning national champions and will attempt to go back-to-back. Alabama will have a new starting quarterback in Bryce Young, but the program is pretty loaded on both sides of the ball.
Here’s the full top 25:
- Alabama
- Oklahoma
- Clemson
- Ohio State
- Georgia
- Texas A&M
- Iowa State
- Cincinnati
- Notre Dame
- UNC
- Oregon
- Wisconsin
- Florida
- Miami
- USC
- LSU
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Penn State
- Washington
- Texas
- Coastal Carolina
- Louisiana (Lafayette)
- Utah
- Arizona State

Here’s how the college football world is reacting to the preseason Top 25.
In last year’s Preseason AP Poll, BYU started 46th and finished 11th.
An increase in 35 spots.

For the last 13 years I have projected the AP Top Ten in February, SIX months in advance of the AP poll.
Pleased to report that for the 4th straight year all 10 of my projections from Feb were in the AP Top 10!
That is 125 out of my 130 teams forecast have made it over 13 yrs. pic.twitter.com/fShI74x7Ld— Phil Steele (@philsteele042) August 16, 2021

Here’s how the AP Poll works:
Reminder of the AP Poll process (out in one hour):
-60ish media submit ballots ranking teams 1-25
-Ballots are tabulated and ordered to produce a combined ranking of all teams receiving votes
–@ralphdrussoap reconfigures the rankings to match his personal rankings

The preseason top 25 poll is typically a pretty good predictor of what’s to come. Ten of the past 12 preseason No. 1 and No. 2 teams have reached the College Football Playoff.
Of the 14 teams to be ranked preseason No. 1 or No. 2 in the playoff era, ten reached the playoff.

There’s usually at least one or two preseason top 10 teams that fail to live up to the hype, though.
Since 2002, every year but one – 2019 when Texas finished 25th – there has been at least one team in the preseason Top 10 that was unranked at the end of the season. Last year three of the preseason Top 9 all finished unranked (6 LSU, 7 Penn State, 9 Oregon).

The college football season will be here soon. Week 0 is less than two weeks away, with Week 1 set for early September.
It can’t get here fast enough.
