We knew that emotions were likely to run high in this Oregon-Ohio State football game. What we never could have anticipated was someone breaking one of the most basic rules of the game: Don’t spit on an opponent.
That lesson was apparently lost on Oregon wide receiver Traeshon Holden, who did exactly that towards a Buckeyes wide receiver after an incomplete pass. He was caught red-handed by officials and promptly ejected from the game.
While ejections aren’t uncommon in football, an ejection for spitting is so rare that some fans who have been watching college football for decades swear they’ve never seen it in a game.
But in this day and age, when you do something it doesn’t just become part of the game – it become part of pop culture. And Holden picked the wrong year to be caught spitting on someone when one of the most famous people in the world has become an overnight millionaire just for talking about it.
Yes, we’re talking about Haliey Welch, aka Hawk Tuah Girl. It didn’t take more than a few minutes for fans to start making “Hawk Tuah” jokes about Holden and his spitting:
“Oh Haliey Welch Hawk Tuahs and gets her own show. Traeshon Holden does it and is ejected?!?” one user joked.
“Holden really Hawk Tuah’d a man,” wrote another.
“Oregon wide receiver Traeshon Holden ejected for HAWK TUAH’ing on Buckeyes CB David Igbinosun,” a third wrote.
As if becoming the butt of jokes around America for spitting weren’t bad enough, Holden is likely facing extra discipline from the team and possibly even a steep drop in his NFL Draft stock for doing that.
We still have no idea why he would do something like that.
