Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer has brought a number of his former college players to his new team. And while none will be as controversial of a signing as Tim Tebow, he’s offered chance to a player most teams have written off.
According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Jaguars have recently worked out wide receiver Devin Smith, who previously played for Meyer at Ohio State. Smith has not played in an NFL game since 2019 and has spent the last year on various practice squads.
Coming out of Ohio State in 2015, Smith was an elite speedster who led Ohio State in receiving yards and touchdown receptions as their won the first-ever College Football Playoff. He went in the second round of the draft to the New York Jets, but injuries quickly derailed his career.
Between 2015 and 2016, Smith was limited to just 14 games and 10 catches for 135 yards and one touchdown. He missed the entire 2017 season with a torn ACL, and was out of football in 2018.

Devin Smith got a small window to resurrect his career with the Dallas Cowboys in 2019. He appeared in four games and had five receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown that year.
But the Cowboys released Smith before the 2020 season and he spent the first part of the campaign on the Houston Texans practice squad. He was released a few weeks later and finished the year on the New England Patriots’ practice squad. The Patriots released him this past July.
But if there’s anyone who can get the most out of Smith, it’s his college head coach Urban Meyer.
Devin Smith doesn’t have a contract with the team yet though. This could be his last chance if Meyer doesn’t give him one.
