By all accounts, Chicago Bears rookie QB Justin Fields will start the 2021 NFL season on the bench – regardless of how the preseason and training camp play out. But the former Ohio State star had a kind message for Andy Dalton, the quarterback who’s getting the start over him.
In a recent interview, Fields was asked what it was like to hear fans cheer and chant his name when he stepped onto the field. Fields responded by praising the fans, but also said that they should be cheering for Dalton too.
“Yeah, I noticed it,” Fields said via The Athletic. “Of course the fans are awesome. They also have to realize Andy’s a human being, too. Andy’s on the field right now, so I think it’s kind of disrespectful to Andy, them cheering my name out like that (when he’s playing). They have to trust in Coach (Matt Nagy) to make sure he’s making the right decisions. Just cheer him on, you know? That’s not helping Andy play better, to cheer my name. My advice to them would be, just cheer whoever is on the field.”
You’ll be hard-pressed to find a stronger message of support for a teammate than that one. It shows great leadership and Fields is getting plenty of praise for it:
Agreed – wise observation and wise words, tremendous perspective and tremendous leadership – and hi.

This was an outstanding answer!!!! I mean, i really can’t even hate after this type of response. Bears fans should be happy. For the record, I wish my team had traded up to get him.

The Chicago Bears traded up to get Justin Fields in the 2021 NFL Draft, but have maintained for weeks that Andy Dalton is their starter.
However, Dalton’s preseason performance thus far hasn’t exactly impressed Bears fans or NFL analysts. Many believe that Dalton will struggle to start the season, leading to Fields starting earlier than expected.
Whether that comes to pass or not, Andy Dalton has at least one big cheerleader on his side.
What did you think of Justin Fields’ message?
